Fire Chief's Statement on LA Fires
Dear Residents of Corte Madera, Larkspur, and Greenbrae,
Recent wildfires in Southern California serve as a stark reminder of the risks we face here in Marin. Wildfires are a predictable part of our environment, and preparedness is essential to protect our communities and loved ones.
Understanding Our Wildfire Risk
History has shown us that wildfire conditions often repeat themselves. From the Oakland Hills Fire to the Tubbs Fire, we’ve seen how predictable factors like weather, terrain, and vegetation create the potential for devastating fires. Wildfires are no longer confined to a season; they can happen any time of year, and our community must adapt to this reality.
Proactive Measures in Our Communities
The Central Marin Fire Department, in partnership with the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MWPA), continues to focus on reducing wildfire risks and enhancing community preparedness.
• Defensible Space Inspections: Annual defensible space inspections are conducted in every neighborhood. These evaluations help residents identify critical improvements around their homes to reduce wildfire vulnerability.
• Evacuation Route Safety: Nearly every road at risk of wildfire in Corte Madera, Larkspur, and Greenbrae has been treated to clear vegetation, ensuring safer evacuation routes during emergencies.
• Regional Fuel Management Projects: Initiatives like the Greater Ross Valley Shaded Fuel Break and localized fuel reduction efforts are essential to slowing fire spread, providing critical time for firefighters and enhancing community safety.
• Home Hardening and Zone Zero: These measures work. By creating a five-foot non-combustible zone around your home, removing flammable materials, and hardening your structures against embers, you can greatly reduce the likelihood of home ignition during a wildfire.
Your Role in Preparedness and Prevention
While these initiatives are vital, they can only succeed with your active participation. Small steps by individuals make a significant impact.
1. Stay Informed: Enroll in AlertMarin (AlertMarin.org) to receive emergency notifications.
2. Prepare Your Home: Visit FireSafe Marin for resources on creating defensible space and hardening your home.
3. Plan for Evacuations: Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes, keep your vehicle ready, and leave early if conditions worsen. Abandoning vehicles or waiting too long to evacuate can create unnecessary risks for everyone.
4. Get Involved: Consider joining or forming a Firewise USA® community in your neighborhood. These programs foster collaboration and increase safety awareness.
Looking Ahead
Wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility. The Central Marin Fire Department remains committed to leading proactive efforts to reduce wildfire risks, but your actions play an equally critical role. By working together, we can make our communities safer, more resilient, and better prepared for the challenges ahead.
Thank you for your continued commitment to wildfire safety.
Sincerely,
Ruben Martin
